Alan is the Branch Head of the Injury and Violence Prevention Branch (IVPB), North Carolina Division of Public Health. The Injury and Violence Prevention Branch supports the NC Department of Health and Human Service’s response to the opioid epidemic, including implementation of the NC Opioid Action Plan, convening the Opioid and Prescription Drug Abuse Advisory Committee (OPDAAC), coordinating the NC’s Syringe Exchange Initiative, providing health data to track the opioid epidemic, and supporting policy initiative to combat the epidemic.

Mr. Dellapenna Co-Chairs, Unintentional Death Committee of the North Carolina Child Fatality Task Force, serves on NC Brain Injury Advisory Council, and advisory boards for the UNC Injury Prevention Research Center and the UNC Highway Safety Research Center. Mr. Dellapenna joined the Division of Public Health following a 27 year career as a Commissioned Officer in the US Public Health Service (PHS), retiring at the rank of Captain. He spent his PHS career assigned to the Indian Health Service, the federal agency responsible for health care and public health services for American Indians and Alaska Natives.

In 2018, Alan was awarded the Alex Kelter Vision Award by the Safe State’s Alliance. The award is Safe States Alliance’s highest honor and recognizes individuals who have brought leadership and vision to the field of injury and violence prevention.
